The war in Yemen has damaged the country's infrastructure, crippled its health system, and created a humanitarian crisis. The United Nations said more than 22 million people are in need of critical help. Saudi Arabia and an alliance of Muslim states intervened in Yemen's civil war in 2015 after the Houthis ousted the internationally-backed government in Sanaa.
He was a dominant figure in Yemen -- ruling the country for more than three decades before being deposed in 2012. But despite being out of office, Ali Abdullah Saleh continued playing a key role in the country's ongoing conflict -- until his death at the hands of the rebel group he once supported.

Washington has acknowledged that about 200 troops have been sent to Yemen. The Pentagon says that their goal is to support Saudi Arabia against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) militants in key port city. But the kingdom's main focus has been on combating the Houthi rebels - who are also enemies of AQAP.
